There was an interesting article in the Globe and Mail a little while ago, which sheds some light on the – sometimes dramatically – increasing cost of drugs. Pharmaceuticals have a valuable place in modern health care. However as so often in life, too much of a good thing can backfire dramatically.
The advantages of pharmaceuticals are generally, that it doesn’t take much time to take them. And in some cases there aren’t any credible alternative treatments to pharmaceuticals. Some of these drugs can be genuine life savers.
Yet the cost of drugs, when over-used, can be so much more than “just” monetary. The more different drugs one takes, the higher the likelihood of negative side-effects (physical, mental, emotional). Also, taking more drugs increases the chance of negative interactions. Furthermore, many stronger painkillers can trigger addiction problems, ending too many lives in misery and/or much too early.
Reducing the monetary and ancillary cost of drugs
However, there are credible drug-free treatments like Cold Laser Therapy for quite a number of very common musculoskeletal conditions from osteoarthritis to internal scar tissue, various forms of tendonitis, and other chronic inflammation type of conditions.
It takes a bit more of an up-front time investment than just popping some pills, but over the longer haul this kind of treatment doesn’t just mask pain like too many drugs do. Alternatively, Cold Laser Therapy helps the body to heal properly, reducing or eliminating the need for pain medications. And isn’t that what we really want?
That’s why it makes incredible sense to prefer drug free treatments for those conditions where they exist. This allows more drug choices for those conditions where there aren’t any drug free alternatives. For example, avoiding drugs for osteoarthritis treatments, avoids numerous conflicts with drugs for heart conditions.
This makes you wonder, why insurance companies aren’t more aggressive in paying for drug free alternative treatments like Cold Laser Therapy. Or why aren’t family doctors recommending it more, when study after study seems to be confirming that this type of light based therapy has numerous applications for a variety of conditions.
